It was a case of “Take up your brush and paint – or paper and pencil if preferred”.

Emmaus Catholic College at Kemps Creek instituted a new competition in 2014 to encourage and support creative students from Years 7-12. Local primary school students were also offered the opportunity to enter.

The Emmaus Portrait Prize, which will be an annual event, required the submission of an A3 portrait drawn or painted on canvas or art paper.  Free choice of subject was allowed with the condition that the portrait be of “a person influential to” the young artist.  Mrs Claudia Harris, Visual Arts teacher considered the entries “vibrant and creative”.

“They showcased many hidden talents of students at Emmaus Catholic College”, she said, adding “that as well as the official judging, staff, parents and students were able to cast votes for the People’s Choice Award”.  To enable this and to allow the entire College community to see and comment on the works submitted, the artworks were on display in the College Library for several weeks.

The 2014 winners, Monique, Gizelle and Kate were congratulated on their fine entries.
