During the April school holidays a group of Year 11 & 12 students and teachers from Emmaus Catholic College travelled to Europe on an experiential learning experience.
Over the course of 15 days, the European Study Tour itinerary took them to Italy, Belgium and France. The students were rewarded with a unique encounter with content and concepts from a range of HSC subjects, including Studies of Religion, Ancient History, Modern History, Society and Culture, Visual Arts, and Italian Beginners.
A highlight of the tour included the beautiful Bay of Naples, where students had the chance to tour Vesuvius and the cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Sorrento.
The students were then immersed in the ancient ruins and museums of Rome. The Vatican City and museums, including Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel and St Peters’ Basilica, were personal and spiritual highlights for many.
Modern History students were among those on the tour who had the opportunity to visit the WW1 battlefields, memorials and cemeteries of the Western Front in Belgium and Northern France.
All students, regardless of whether they study Modern History, were touched by the reality of these places and the memory of those who lost their lives fighting for their nation’s freedom on the battlefronts.
One of the more touching experiences for the Emmaus students was the Last Post ceremony they attended at Mein Gate. This gave them the opportunity to pay their respects by laying a wreath on behalf of their College community.
This magical tour concluded in exotic Paris, with a whirlwind tour of French museums, art galleries, famous landmarks, and the odd croissant or two thrown in.
The final day, spent at Disneyland Paris and Walt Disney Studios, brought to a close an intense educational experience that will have a lasting and memorable impact on all who attended.
The Emmaus European Study Tour is fast becoming known for its ability to enliven the stories, artworks and language student’s study, and bring real-life experiences into the classroom.
